This is a very powerful work for the laity. It is a help to prayer, devotion, and the Christian walk in general. It is focused mostly on the lifelong disciplines that will help a Christian achieve a devotion worthy of sanctity. This book changed my life, and laid the groundwork for Enthroned.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church has a beautiful section on Christian prayer. This bible is truly a gift to our modern age as we have lost so much of the context of the life and times of Jesus and the traditions of the Jewish people which are the roots of our faith. This bible has footnotes and studies in it that provide contextual understanding and church-guided interpretation of the readings. It is an indispensable tool for learning the New Testament scriptures.
Once you begin spending time with God in prayer it is very important to read about the stages of the spiritual life. So often the reason people stop praying is because of time of darkness where it seems as though God has left. Learning about the spiritual life will help you see that the dryer/darker times are just as important as the times of consolation and communion, and as such will empower you to continue on your journey in prayer toward God.
The Laudate App is a great tool for practicing Lectio Divina with the daily readings used in the liturgy. Download it > Open it. Go to Daily Readings & Saint of the Day > Daily Readings. Use this every morning for prayer and in about three years you will have prayed through almost 80% of the bible. This will stir a new creation in you. This app has loads of other good stuff as well.
